Re-imagining professional coaching for everyone

Overview

Outpace (known during development as Scale) was a project to democratize coaching for both high performers seeking guidance, and senior talent seeking to share their experience.

They came to MetaLab with a plan and a great network, and we were tasked with going from a no-code prototype into a shipping product and brand.

My Role

I was the Design Lead coordinating a design team of 3 Product Designers and 1 Brand Designer.

My core responsibilities were design team leadership, defining and managing the design plan, leading client meetings and reviews, and key presentations with executive stakeholders.

Kick-off workshop

We used a variety of techniques to achieve our goals, including group sketching to kick off the project and adapting to changing scope by dividing the work among team members and prioritizing communication and collaboration.

We found that group sketching was an effective way to unpack assumptions and create momentum for the project to begin. The process involved getting everyone to draw their vision of the product, or a feature area within the product. By encouraging everyone to do 8 ideas in a very short time, and limiting the drawing space to a small canvas, we were able to prevent overthinking and self-consciousness. The group sketching process was facilitated with care to maintain spirits while also moving the team forward, creating positive momentum that helped the group take on tougher discussions head-on.

Adapting to evolving scope

When it comes to adapting to changing scope, we found that dividing the work among team members and prioritizing communication and collaboration was key. We had to juggle between two workstreams on different platforms, which was a challenge. To overcome this, we assigned 2 designers to the mobile app workstream and assigned the third designer to the web-based workflow for coach users. The designers worked with more freedom and responsibility, and the project lead supported them by prioritizing their review work and spending more time jamming on alternate ideas to keep things dynamic.

Despite the difficulties, the project was completed successfully. We were able to manage two different workstreams on different platforms, and the increased ownership by the other 2 product designers meant they were able to make increasingly higher-level decisions. The project lead was able to avoid being a bottleneck, and our prioritization of communication and collaboration helped mitigate any feelings of isolation from a morale and collaboration standpoint.

Overall, this project highlights the importance of using effective techniques like group sketching and prioritizing communication and collaboration to achieve project goals. It also shows the value of dividing work among team members to manage changing scope and increasing ownership over project tasks. Our team's success in completing the project despite the challenges we faced is a testament to our skills and dedication.

Outcome

Outpace launched to the world in March 2023 and we're very excited to see how it impacts the world!
